KLEIN GRASS

A Smart Alternative

Klein Grass, Panicum Coloratum, is a warm season perennial that is planted in the Southwest for hay production and grazing. Klein Grass is a native grass of Africa and was first introduced into the United States in the 1950s.

It is a fine-stem, leafy hay that is very palatable and nutritious. It can be used as a replacement for lower quality Alfalfa in cattle rations. It can also be used, in its young cut stage, as a starter forage for young calves.

Note: It is not recommended for horses.

Benefits

Klein Grass is a nutritious, versatile forage with benefits for both cattle and dairy operations:

  • Highly palatable, with a texture cattle take to easily

  • Perennial crop that doesn't need to be replanted or tilled each year

  • Deep root system that uses water and nutrients efficiently

Palatable, nutritious, and a reliable Alfalfa alternative, Klein Grass is a smart forage choice for cattle and dairy operations focused on quality and value.

  • Extensive root system that helps store carbon in the soil

  • Low maintenance, requiring less tractor work and fewer inputs

  • Thrives during the hottest months when other crops may struggle
