Alfalfa is a perennial crop that is grown in many areas throughout the United States. It is well adapted to a wide range of climatic and soil conditions and grows very well in dry climates on irrigated fertile soils.

Alfalfa is one of the most important forage plants grown in the U.S. It has the highest feeding value of all commonly grown hay crops. Alfalfa produces higher protein than any other hay crop for livestock, as well as being a good source of fiber, and other vitamins and minerals.

In California, alfalfa has a long growing season, with harvesting beginning in late winter though late fall. Depending on the area it is being grown, alfalfa in California will be cut 6 to 8 times per year. Quality of each cutting is influenced by the local weather and harvest conditions.
